U.S. Launches Initiative To Develop Small Modular Reactors For Commercial Shipping.  U.S. transport secretary Sean Duffy and U.S. Maritime Administrator Stephen Carmel priortize SMRs into maritime to reclaim U.S. sea power. The project aims to identify streamlined deployment methods to integrate nuclear power across entire fleets, integrate SMR production into US yards, build a workforce pipeline and advance regulatory readiness for the technology. US maritime administrator Stephen Carmel, who leads MARAD, said successfully introducing SMRs in shipping requires a “system-transition lens” rather than just a technology demonstration.  U.S. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy said, “By partnering with industry experts and outside-the-box thinkers to develop a strong SMR model, we will deliver a state-of-the-art energy source that cuts costs and bolsters national security". MARAD and the transport department believe nuclear propulsion could allow commercial ships to travel farther and faster, while eliminating fuel costs and maintenance needs.
